Lime Kilns Kelso

Nottylees Lime Kiln is situated near Nottylees Farm and right on the edge of the old Berwick to Kelso Railway about 14 of a mile West of Carham Burn, 12 mile West of the Shidlaw Tile Works England and 14 of a mile East of the Hadden Tile Works Scotland. Many thanks to David Welsh for taking me on a wander over the area described above.

    In 2003 archaeological fieldwork was conducted at the Hullerhirst lime kilns, to the northeast of Stevenston in North Ayrshire, in advance of construction of the A78 Ardrossan, Saltcoats and Stevenston Bypass. Despite past damage, well preserved remains of two lime kilns, juxtaposed in an Lshape, were uncovered.

    Feb 23, 2020 Take a hike north of the lighthouse along the trail to the lime kiln and read the history adjacent to the kiln. It was quite fascinating how the rock was mined, loaded into the kiln and cooked. The trade of lime on ships at this site was interesting. It is a beautiful location along the coast as we hiked through the woods.

    Three natural draft lime kilns of Gypsum Lime and Alabastine Limited in 1957. GLA bought the kilns from the Robertson Lime Company in the late 1920s.
